A love story
before ours.

Stone and time

Founded by King Afonso Henriques, Alcobaça Monastery preserves the simplicity of the Cistercian tradition. Its light, arches and stillness have endured through the centuries.

Pedro & Inês

In the church’s transept lie King Pedro I and Inês de Castro, in two tombs that are masterpieces of Portuguese medieval sculpture.

Placed facing one another, they inspired the tradition of a reunion on the Day of Resurrection. A story forever linked to Alcobaça.
